These Guidelines based on recommendations from NeighborSpace and the Chicago Community Gardeners Association

We all have been wondering about how to best interact with our community gardens during a stay-at-home order.

We know that when we shelter in place, we are doing what’s best for our communities and fellow Chicagoans. We strongly encourage everyone to stay home to help “flatten the curve” and limit the spread of this virus. Remember that not making contact with other people could save many lives.

If you do need to visit your garden, please stay vigilant about safety and social distancing. We strongly encourage gardeners to follow these guidelines for the duration of the governor’s order and possibly beyond.

COVID-19 & Community Gardening in Chicago

Getting outside for a touch of nature is important, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. However, all social contact increases the risk of spreading the virus.​ The best way to reduce this risk is to STAY HOME.

When you decide to visit your garden, exercise an abundance of caution.​ Community gardening is riskier than taking a walk. Help keep yourself and your community safe by following the following guidelines.

DO visit the garden on your own or only with members of your immediate household.

DO practice social distancing. Stay at least an arm and a shovel length (6 feet) from others.

DO limit the garden to 10 people at a time, as long as gardeners can maintain social distancing. Please consider returning later for everyone’s safety.

DO bring your own gloves.

DO bring your own tools if you have them.

DO wash your hands regularly with soap. Use hand sanitizer if there is no water available. Bring your own soap or sanitizer to the garden, as supplies are limited.

DO be aware of high-touch surfaces. If you must touch gate handles, water spigots, shed doors, or tools, disinfect them before and after use.

DO remove any personal items and/or trash you bring to the garden.

DO thoroughly wash all produce you harvest from the garden at home.

DO check the online task list for collective duties and report your time.

DON’T come to the garden if you or someone in your home is sick, if you are a member of a vulnerable population, or if you have health conditions. When in doubt, stay home.

DON’T use community tools if you are able to bring your own. If tools must be shared, be diligent and disinfect handles before and after use.

DON’T share gloves. Adults and kids will wear their own washable gloves while in the garden.

Please remember that our first responsibility is to keep each other safe!
